Stormbird is a book I could devour over and over again. Following in the footsteps of Torn and Inviolate, this suspenseful romance is by far Karen Turner’s best yet. It has left me excited about what is next. As I read, Jessica, the main protagonist, sat with me as a good friend would. I had to remind myself that she was a character of fiction as I willed her to go with her heart, holding my breath in despair, hope, love and elation.

Set in 1941, our last visit to Broughton hall being in 1813 via Inviolate, Stormbird is a story of love amongst adversity. It is a story of hope, unity and compassion. As the British and Germans battle at war Jessica and her family find themselves in a situation where loyalty to their country wages a battle against love. With her husband recently killed at war Jessica must overcome her mixed emotions for the Luftwaffe pilot she now harbours in her home, finding a level of compassion that wills her to help the dangerously ill young captain. As she nurses Anton back to health a forbidden love grows. As I read, I wanted nothing more than happiness and forever for Jessica and Anton but as the British Government’s hunt for the fugitive German closes in, as neighbours become enemies, I felt despair as forever seemed impossible.

Presenting with 678 pages I gasped a little when I first saw Stormbird. I always feel overwhelmed when confronted with a novel of so many pages, having to remind myself that it’s not about the number of pages but the author’s ability to carry you in a way that leaves you wanting the next page. In Stormbird Karen Turner has done this. As I closed the book for the last time I felt a level of sadness. I had become a part of Jessica’s family and, in a strange way, connected to their situation. In her writing Karen Turner presents characters and plot that see you leave the world of fiction and enter a world of striking reality.
